Martyred Journalist

Life is so uncertain in Kohat district of Paktunkhwa Pakistan, a journalist colleague working for Associated Press of Pakistan as correspondent in Orakzai agency was martyred in Kacha Pakha suicide bomb attack earlier this month, ‘martyred Azmat Ali Bangash was in Orakzai agency when I met him he was standing at a roadside, and had told me Taliban have threatened me, but in the line of duty I am here to do reporting,’ an editor of local weekly Fazal Mehmood Ain has said. Fazal has his last photograph in which martyred journalist Azmat Ali Bangash is clearly visible, his face seems still intact; Fazal says his body was not badly damaged in suicide bomb attack.

Journalists working in Kohat district and its adjacent tribal areas of Orakzai agency and Dara Adam Khel, are all brave hearts, a young journalist Mumtaz Bangash has told me I am receiving threats from Taliban militants because of information sharing with government agencies, he was confidently sitting in his office while saying this. I do meet them once a month, if I have some spare time, because I am based here as part time correspondent of Associated Press of Pakistan from last ten years, I do share my experience with junior journalists, after martyrdom of Azmat Ali Bangash I had advised my photo journalist colleagues to use zoom lenses while giving coverage to UN and IDP’S from a distance they can cover them by their cameras and can stay remain safe.

Kohat valley is surrounded by high and rocky mountains, on the other side of the mountains is Orakzai agency and Dara Adam Khel tribal areas, I do use my cell phone and laptop most often to get information, government agencies do coordinate with me, recently when a young riding a tractor had tried to hit outside wall of my residence had got his tractor’s tire stuck into empty before boundary wall of my residence, the culprit was immediately held by SHO Sadar police station Kohat Mr. Mazhar Jehan, the tractor was hired by a bearded fellow constructing a home for himself just in front of my residence, the suspect was immediately released by SHO and no action was taken against the bearded owner of the under construction house. Interestingly Maulana Fazal ur Rehman was also about to arrive in Paracha Town Kohat at residence of Jamil Paracha, my residence is also located in Paracha Town Kohat.

Now the SHO Mazhar Jehan has been transferred to another police station, God has saved me probably because of some of my good deeds; I was inside the room adjacent to outside boundary wall when young bearded tractor driver had tried to hit the wall of my residence with his tractor. After few days of this incident Azmat Bangash was martyred in suicide bomb attack in Kacha Pakha area of Kohat while covering registration process of IDP’s before WFP office.

Most of the journalists are now residing in Islamabad capital of Pakistan, in the line of duty I am still stuck here in Kohat district, journalists are not politicians and can not get official guards for their residences and themselves, we can not work freely in presence of bodyguards, no where else in the world journalists work under heavy security, mostly we hide if any threat has been received or attempt has been made on our lives, at least I do that, once while coming towards my home a man wearing dirty clothes have tried to kill me with his pistol pen, but the bullet got stuck in the pistol and the assassin had managed to escape, it was happened when General Arif Bangash was Governor of NWFP province. Many a times I have survived attempts on my life during past ten years in Kohat district that I do not remember the exact number of attempts made, once SSP Liaqat Ali Khan had arrested few people when one among them have fired a pistol shot at me, I became used too to all this mess, I am a realistic person, Pakistan is not USA where journalists are fourth pillar of state, in a developing country like Pakistan no journalist expect anything from the government, our Journalist friends in USA and Canada often provide us moral support, the maximum which Associated Press of Pakistan has done for its correspondents is coverage of life insurance policy, but other journalists working for private print and electronic media are still devoid of any sort of life insurance coverage.

PPP lead coalition government believes in constitutionalism and democracy

Pakistan is heading towards constitutionalism and democracy rapidly, and elected government has become more vocal about misdeeds of dictatorial regimes of the past. Recently president Asif Ali Zardari had reportedly said that investigations regarding judicial murder of twice elected prime minister of Pakistan Mr. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Shaheed will be held and guilty of his judicial murder will be held accountable.

Eighteenth amendment in Pakistan’s constitution was approved by both the houses of parliament and finally was signed by President of Pakistan Mr. Asif Ali Zardari. ‘In consequence of 18th amendment parliament has become sovereign,’ Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gailani has reportedly said.

Name of NWFP province of Pakistan has been changed and now new name of the said province is Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, change in the name of NWFP by 18th amendment was resented by people of Hazara division and last week protest demonstrations in Abotabad capital of Hazara division were resulted in clashes between police and angry mob, consequently at least ten people were reportedly killed last week and dozens of others were injured. Now Hazara division is calm and media reports reflect that demands of populace of Hazara division will be accepted through another constitutional amendment.

UN investigators have released the report regarding murder case of Muhtarima Benazir Bhutto Shaheed; President Asif Ali Zardar has reportedly expressed his satisfaction over the findings of UN investigators. According to media reports five million dollars were paid to UN by Pakistan for the said investigations.

According to news report published on BBC website UN investigators report reflects that sufficient measures were not taken by the government of General Parvez Musharaf to provide security to Muhtarima Benazir Bhutto Shaheed and after her murder police investigations were not carried out in apt manner due to pressure from certain government agencies.

Democratic attitude of PPP lead coalition government has been resulted in enhanced trust of international community and according to a news report published in Wall Street Journal during past few months around two hundred million dollars foreign investment came into Pakistan.

Militants attacked American consulate in Peshawar

Since long pro Alqaeda elements in Pakistan are trying to target American diplomats, good deal of written pamphlets containing anti American rhetoric were circulated off and on in Pakistani cities by Islamists and pro Alqaeeda element. Monday armed attack on American Consulate in Peshawar in which three Pakistani security forces men were died and six terrorists were killed is continuity of Alqaeeda agenda concerning ouster of American diplomats from Pakistan.

Prior to Monday attack on American Consulate in Peshawar around twelve o’clock a suicide bomber had detonated his explosive vest amid political meeting of Awami National Party in Teemargara, at least 50 people were died and dozens of others were injured.

TTP has taken the responsibility of attack on US consulate in Peshawar, defunct TTP is a pro Alqaeeda militant organization having roots in both Pakistan and Afghanistan. Alqaeeda has been focusing on Pakistan and Afghanistan to impose its dictatorial agenda on rest of the world, American efforts to promote democracy and rule of law in Pakistan and Afghanistan are major set back for Alqaeeda dictatorial designs, once American and European diplomats are ousted from Pakistan including UN officials People of Pakistan will be at the mercy of Alqeeda and TTP terrorists bent upon gaining control of Pakistan’s nuclear assets to promote their rule in rest of the world. Repeated attacks on European, and American embassies and consulates and on UN offices were witnessed during past few years in Pakistan.

Awami National party is part of PPP ruling coalition in Pakistan and is part of the effort concerning strengthening of democratic institutions in Pakistan; its workers were attacked in Teemergara on Monday and were previously attacked in Swat and other districts of Pakistan. Though Pakistan security forces have cleaned the tribal areas of Pakistan up to larger extent from TTP and Alqaeeda militants but due to security lapses remaining network of militants become able to launch attacks even in settled areas of Pakistan.
