Pak-US relations

President Ronald Reagan had confronted Soviet Army in Afghanistan through CIA and Pakistan’s prime intelligence agency ISI after extending 4.2 billion dollars aid to Pakistan eventually Soviet Army was driven out from Afghanistan. In the wake of nine eleven attacks President Bush had used Armed forces to eradicate a secret organization Alqaeeda from Afghanistan which was found guilty of nine eleven attacks on US Soil. US and its NATO allies came under UN mandate in Afghanistan to achieve specific and well defined objectives which are limited to the borders of Afghanistan. When US Defense Secretary Mr. Robert Gates states that US will never capture any part of Pakistan and has a great respect for Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity besides it has no aggressive designs towards Pakistan’s nuclear installations, and terms US lack of interest in Afghanistan soon after pullout of Soviet forces from Afghanistan as shortsightedness of US leadership of that time, he sounds quite rational but he shall not ignore the fact that democrats are basically always more concerned about the well being of people of USA and US economy had witnessed unprecedented boom during eight years of President Bill Clinton. Besides USA had never intervened militarily in Afghanistan before his era, President Reagan had tackled Soviet invasion of Afghanistan through CIA and ISI. Both these organizations had aided Afghan freedom fighters to liberate Afghanistan from Soviet subjugation.

On Thursday last week I was in Islamabad when Mr. Robert Gates had arrived their, in the evening I had paid a courtesy call to retired librarian of American Center in Islamabad, and in his drawing room a retired director of radio Pakistan had also made his presence felt, both the elderly figures were quite concerned about present state of affairs in Pakistan and Afghanistan, questions regarding US possible intervention were raised before me, increased number of drone attacks in tribal areas of Pakistan, presence of militant organizations within border areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan and their cross border activity are the main concerns of informed public circles in Pakistan these days, invalidation of NRO by Supreme Court of Pakistan is one another concern of public circles though Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gailani and President Asif Ali Zardari have assured public that Supreme Court decision regarding NRO will be implemented in its letter and spirit.

‘On Sunday in Humzooni area of Detta Khel North Waziristan a US suspected drone was hit and destroyed by tribesmen,’ media reports, the incident reflects enhance capability of Taliban militants present in that area. Soviet Army was also unable to confront Afghan freedom fighters when with the help of US Stinger missiles they have started hitting Soviet planes and gunship helicopters. At the time of Soviet occupation people of Afghanistan and tribal areas of Pakistan were not capable of extending potent resistance, CIA and ISI have trained and equipped those people with sophisticated weapons to confront Soviets.

Soviets designs to impose communism on Afghanistan were frustrated by Afghan freedom fighters, wit the help of ISI and CIA but aggressive, undemocratic and dictatorial designs of militants organizations present in Pakistan and Afghanistan are again challenging civil society, parliamentary elections in Afghanistan has been postponed, no date for local bodies elections has been fixed yet in Pakistan, though the tenure of present office bearers has been ended. Militant organizations are wiped out from Swat, and Bunair but are still quite active in other tribal areas of Pakistan and do resist elections.

Pentagon strategy for Afghanistan during Ronald Reagan era was a success, US Army or its NATO allies were not trapped into Afghanistan in the wake of Soviet provocation. War was fought by the people of Afghanistan against Soviet invaders. In response to nine eleven provocation USA and its NATO allies have been trapped in Afghanistan after sending troops their, though US President Obama has revised the strategy and have decided to pull out from Afghanistan within next few years, and efforts to train and equip Afghan police and Armed forces to contain Taliban militants in absence of foreign troops are underway, yet the public circles in Pakistan fear Talibanization of Afghanistan soon after departure of US and NATO forces from Afghanistan.

Cat coup

My cat has taken over my laptop for reasons best known to her, I do care for her needs including her aesthetic sense, she is a rare cat, and holds rose flowers grown on rose plants, planted in flower pots to get the fragrance without breaking the plant. I was unable to capture the scene with my camera in which she was taking fragrance from rose while holding it in very delicate manner. Obviously she had taken over my laptop for quite a long period of time so I have captured this scene with my camera, to share it with my readers, picture of her take over has been pasted on this blog.

An exclusive chat with Roohullah

Young Roohullah from Bajure tribal agency serves tea to customers while working in a restaurant of Teerah Bazaar Kohat, he wants to join back his school but can not do so because of long working hours. I was sitting with a local newsman Mr. Sahibzada Afridi in his office located in a hundred year old building, when teenage Roohullah had served tea for us, Sahibzada had urged me to write about him, and Roohullah was bold enough to tell me about himself and the plight of another six young boys came from Bajure and working with him in Kohat for more then 15 hours a day and for two hundred rupees per day.

Roohullah says in Keet Kote area of Bajure agency he was a student of class six when during vacations he had decided to earn some money while working in Lahore on daily wages to support his family consist upon his mother, father and two elder brothers and three elder sisters. At the end of vacations he had joined back school, as a student of class ninth he was once again compelled to leave school for financial reasons and to come to Kohat to earn some money. In fifteen years of age four years ago he came to Kohat and had started his job as restaurant worker. He lives in a room located in a near by market and shares it with other worker boys and pays two hundred rupees per month as rent.

Roohullah has said that when he was in Keet Kote village of Bajure, Taliban militants were in Afghanistan, and four years back his area was clean, among other six boys working along with him three are around fifteen years of age and other three boys are older then him, he says, we all start our job soon after the morning prayers and our work ends late in the evening, he wants to join back school but can not do so due to financial reasons which compelled him to leave school and work hard to support his family, his two elder brothers are now also working in Lahore capital of Punjab. Roohullah says no physical torture, no sexual offence or any other torture was faced by him during his job as restaurant worker in Kohat district of NWFP Pakistan. The moment he has said this in reply to my questions, newsman Sahibzada has intervened and has said, Roohullah go back owner of your restaurant will be angry with you that you have spent too much time to serve tea to a customer. Young and obedient Roohullah went back to his restaurant and after his departure a source came to confirm the Sunday afternoon explosions, which were caused when security forces men have diffused twenty kilogram explosive material in Sheraki village of Dara Adam Khel after recovering it from the miscreants. Late in the evening I came back home with the heavy heart. In the absence of efficient welfare system young children are compelled to do harsh and odd jobs, Roohullah and many other boys of Pakistani and Afghan origin are doing awfully odd jobs, I hope PPPP lead coalition government will take notice of this situation which we inherited from rulers of the past.

Philosophy of nonviolence

Khan Abdul Ghafar Khan being a foresighted leader of subcontinent was determined to inculcate Mahatma Ganndi’s philosophy of nonviolence in his followers in NWFP and elsewhere in the subcontinent. His red cap followers used to work as volunteers (Khudai Khidmatgar) in NWFP, honest Khan Abdul Ghafar Khan Known as Bacha Khan in NWFP were committed to high moral values of truth, justice and fair play in politics along with nonviolent attitude. He was against the partition of India during British Raj and has always kept good relations with his colleagues of Indian National Congress even after partition of subcontinent in 1947. He had struggled for the rights of people of NWFP in his life time, and had opted for eternal rest for his burial in his own garden located in Jalalabad Afghanistan. In early 1990’s I had a chance to offer Fatiha on his half built tomb in Jalal Abad Afghanistan.

Muhatima Gandhi another legend of subcontinent was proponent of nonviolence in politics, and a man of high moral values. He has risked his life while making a statement in favor of Pakistan regarding fair distribution of common assets after partition in 1947 and was eventually died in armed attack launched by a Hindu extremist Godsay.

Khan Abdul Ghafar Khan and Muhatima Gandhi were genuine leaders and were in habit of spending their time in company of people, both were fear less and highly intelligent. In my childhood I had shaken hand with Khan Abdul Ghafar Khan at that time he was grown too old and was sitting in a wheel chair. The warmth of his palm is still a memory which I do cherish. He had got long hands, tall and well built in his youth he had struggled hard to fight for the rights of the people and was jailed by rulers, the astonishing aspect of the personalities of Muhatima Gandhi and Khan Abdul Ghafar Khan is their political vision, both were able to grasp the real cause of economic and political backwardness of the people of subcontinent, both have targeted communal violence and violence prevailing in society of subcontinent in different forms and manifestations by their political philosophy of nonviolence to eradicate this main cause of backwardness of the people of subcontinent.

Congress in India and Awami National Party in Pakistan are still carrying out the philosophy of nonviolence, ANP membership has been spread over till Sindh province of Pakistan, in fact survival of the people of subcontinent in nuclear age has become dependent upon prevalence of the philosophy of nonviolence.

Fog

Deep and thick layer of fog had covered Kohat valley on Thursday morning, temperature went down and visibility become unbelievably low. Never before I have witnessed such phenomena in Kohat, till afternoon fog was diminished, on Friday sun is shining over Rocky Mountains of Kohat, the fog phenomenon is over now.

My cats were quite and calm when the fog took over the Kohat valley, sitting beside me near the gas heater both were enjoying the warmth amid chilling cold. On Friday the cats had a sun bath while sitting near the rose plants.

Electricity failures for long durations in Kohat due to reasons best known to WAPDA authorities it has become virtually impossible to write detailed essays, in haste when I try to write something during brief restoration period of electricity due to disruptions in electric supply system and slow speed of internet it becomes virtually impossible to post the pictures with news stories and articles.

Noises of bomb explosions coming out from different areas of Kohat and near by tribal area of Dara Adam Khel are now less in number, one or two explosions was average in a day, but today no explosion was heard in any part of the district.

IDP’s from near by Orakzai tribal agency have occupied few homes in Paracha Town, in the morning when I come out from home to have a walk till the main road, I do witness IDP’s and their small children basking in the sun in open space near the main Kohat Pindi road.

Two days earlier a pregnant donkey having sun bath in the open space near my French windows was witnessed in the morning, I took few snaps of the beautiful, healthy and good looking donkey. Few days earlier a donkey was killed and eaten up by a wild and mad dog, the dog was killed by tenants of Fazal Hussain Khan owner of the cultivated land near by my residence.

My cats in presence of good number of stray dogs present in streets of Paracha town feel insecure, and mostly prefer to stay in home. The stray dogs rule the streets during the night, and create good deal of cat terror, during Ayube Khan era Kanji houses for stray animals were their in Kohat, where stray animals were kept by government, but now that animal protection cell of government doesn’t seem to be quite active.

Price hike

‘Sugar price inside Paracha Town Kohat shops and in shops near WAPDA Grid station on Kohat Pindi road is 65/rs per kg, a price much beyond the reach of consumers,’ a customer has said.

‘Sugar price in utility store is 38/rs per kg but the sugar is not available in the store right now,’ an employee of government utility store situated near Paracha Town Kohat has said.

Retired Subidar Sardar Ali Khatak says that utility store located near Paracha Town Kohat employees are selling sugar at the price of 58/rs per kg, he says that he has refused to buy sugar on such a high price from government utility store.

‘Permit system for sugar sellers has been ended, now the price of Sugar is 65/rs per kg,’ ex permit holder Zaman shopkeeper has said.

‘Only tomatoes are cheap in Kohat bazaar, I have bought four kilo gram tomatoes in Jut 60/rs, all other edible items including edible oil prices are gone up,’ retired superintendent WAPDA Mr. Noman has said.

‘ From Kohat Pindi road shops to shopkeepers of Kohat city, shopkeepers do not display any price lists in their shops openly, but sell flour and sugar and other commodities at rates of their own choice, government shall take necessary steps to end black marketing and price hike,’ a customer has said.

‘As compare to salaries and wages prices of essential commodities are so high in Kohat district that consumers’ purchasing power has been ended. Price hike seems to be a conspiracy against PPPP lead coalition government. Anti government elements to destabilize existing regime are deliberately raising prices of essential commodities to eliminate sympathy in public for existing rulers, and to move the price hike struck angry masses against government,’ an analyst has said.

Pak-India Relations

People of subcontinent have almost common genetic inheritance, Arian and Dravidian are two predominant races in this region and people of both races are further divided on bases of religion. Hindu, Muslims Christians, Jews, Budhists, and some other religious entities form religious outlook of subcontinent. Because of intermarriages between people of both races quite healthy generations having common genetic inheritance are now prevailing in subcontinent.

Prior to 14th of August 1947 subcontinent was known as India, it was divided into two different parts after creation of Pakistan on 14th of August 1947. Afterwards two major wars were fought between India and Pakistan in 1965 and 1971, in result of 1971 war Pakistan was dismembered and new state of Bangla Desh came into existence. Number of limited wars were also fought between India and Pakistan and limited war on Siachin glacier and in Afghanistan are still an ongoing reality.

The outcome of failure of political leadership and diplomatic core to resolve issues between states is most often war; people of subcontinent are in a very difficult situation due to frequent failures of their political leadership, and its inability to resolve issues through diplomatic and peaceful means due to prevailing ignorance in this region.

Growth of extremist ideologies is an outcome of economic backwardness and prevailing ignorance in subcontinent, though majority of people are now politically aware and have elected a PhD Prime Minister Sardar Manmohan Singh in India twice, in Pakistan PPPP lead coalition government came into power through ballot recently.

Both India and Pakistan are nuclear powers and all out war between both seems quite eminent if General Deepak Kapoor Chief of Indian Army Staff statements recently conveyed to me through media are based on truth.

Interestingly during election campaign in Pakistan anti India rhetoric was avoided by politicians, and the campaign was based on issues of other issues of national importance, as an effort to normalize relations with India, but through media reports I came to know that anti Pakistan rhetoric was focus of Indian leadership during the Indian election campaign.

Recent media reports reflect that dozens of our Dravidian and Arian cousins in India were died in India due to severe weather conditions and prevailing hunger among its 78% population.

Let us fight intelligently and bravely against extremism, poverty, hunger and disease together, nuclear powers do not fight limited wars to avoid the risk of total war with their next door nuclear neighbor, China and Soviet Union are living example before us, both neighboring nuclear powers have immediately resolved their border disputes soon after China’s attainment of nuclear status during the second half of previous century. Better and wiser course of action for India and Pakistan is settlement of Kashmir and other disputes through diplomatic and peaceful means.

A dead body having numerous bullets wounds of an unidentified man was also found in the said area. Vacated homes of migrated tribesmen were targeted and burnt by militants in Tori Mela area of headquarter of lower Orakzai agency Feroz Khel, all the goods inside homes were also burnt to ashes,’ official sources.

‘Traditional way of inflicting punishment by Jirga (Council of Elders) decision is that homes of punishable tribesmen are vacated by order of Jirga elders and dwellers are allowed only to pick few things from their homes which can be carried in hands, normally tribesmen punished by jirga elders carry cash and gold out from their homes, but Jirga elders do not allow the tribesmen to load their goods in trucks and other vehicles. Once the punished tribesmen are out from their homes their homes are usually burnt to ashes in pursuance of Jirga decision,’ sources have said.

‘Defunct Taliban militant organizations have taken control of many areas of Orakzai agency, and have become soul decision making power, traditional Jirga elders are replaced by defunct TTP militant courts, and militants burn the homes of their opponents,’ a source has said on condition of anonymity.
