Alqaida is quite active in Kohat district
Half a million inhabitants of Kohat valley surrounded by high peak dry and rocky mountains are living in peace since centuries, Pushto and Hindku languages prevail in this vally, unexplored remnants of previous civilizations in this valley are an ample proof of its rich cultural heritage. During British Raj prior to 1947 Kohat became a big garrison of British Royal Indian Army; an airport was also built by British rulers in Kohat.
When Pakistan came into existence in 1947, successive governments have expanded the garrison area in Kohat; base for Pakistan Air Force was also expanded in adjacent area of airport, where now US forces are also having some existence now. In Pakistan Air Force base of Kohat some buildings are also erected for US forces officials and equipment.
Valley of Kohat is surrounded by tribal areas of Dara Adam Khel, Orakzai Agency, Kurram Agency and North Waziristan.
During war against Soviet invaders of Afghanistan Kohat remained secure due to presence of Pakistan Army and Air force in this city, though its adjacent tribal areas are sharing borders with Afghanistan, since late 1970’s till 1991 no bomb explosion took place in Kohat, though Karachi specifically and few other cities of Pakistan were frequent victims of sabotage activity carried out by Indian RAW and Afghan KHAD agents.
After nine eleven incidents when Pakistan became involved in war against terrorism, Kohat also became a target of Alqaida militants, a radio station was created in Muhammad Zai village of Kohat and prior to nine eleven incidents, men were inducted in Alqaida in very secretive manner by certain retired Pakistan Army officials.
Talibanization of Kohat valley was continued in a very systematic way due to involvement of retired Pak Army officials. Since last one year numerous CD shops are damaged by militants through bomb explosions in Kohat.
Now situation on the ground is that in suburban areas mosques of Kohat, Alqaida men are not only providing training to suicide bombers but are also collecting funds from the people. I was informed about these phenomena by a loyal retired Pak Army serviceman Mr. Tariq Mehmood, and then a journalist residing in Jerma village of Kohat came up with news regarding training activity of Alqaida men in Muhammadi mosque in his area. Covert activity of Taliban and Alqaida militants is now changing into overt actions in this area, adjacent tribal area of Kohat known as Dara Adam Khel is virtually in control of Taliban militants, they have created check posts on Kohat Peshawar road and are openly arresting people by stopping vehicles traveling on Kohat Peshawar road.
Within Kohat garrison area Pak Army men are doing their patrolling duty, a suicide bomb attack on a mosque in garrison area in which 17 persons were killed few months ago was the second suicide bomb attack carried out in garrison area, prior to that residence of Lieutenant General Khatak incharge Waziristan operations was attacked by a suicide bomber in which four security men were killed in Kohat garrison area. Retired Lieutenant General Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah ex Governor of NWFP when was received by rocket attacks in Waziristan few years ago, operation against militants in Waziristan was started during his tenure. On Thursday night three armed militants had snatched weapons from police guards posted on residence of Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah located in KDA area of Kohat, and had managed to escape, today early in the morning police guards posted in Paracha Town Kohat where my residence is located are called back to police lines by District Police Officer Kohat, now Paracha Town is without police guards.
Peace loving citizens of Kohat are in a difficult situation due to presence of large number of Afghan refugees and religious seminary students, Army men do patrolling in Garrison area and on Kohat Pindi road, but suburban areas of Kohat are now hub of Alqaida and Taliban militants activity, though so far only Army Garrison area and CD shops are targeted by militants but residents of posh areas are also under threat of militants attack now.
